Summer Exhibitions in Madrid – Akeah Hotel Adults Only Blog

Aug 1, 2022

Are you planning a trip to the capital this summer? Visiting the most tourist attractions and strolling through the streets is a good plan, but you can’t miss out on the cultural side of the city either. Here we show you the best exhibitions to see this summer in Madrid.

KLIMT: La experiencia inmersiva

The KLIMT experience is located in an immersive projection space of almost 1000 m2. Inspired by the works of Gustav Klimt, an Austrian painter with an unmistakable aesthetic, this experience consists of several large-format projections. Visitors will feel as if they are inside the paintings and architectural works that the artist decorated. In addition, with virtual reality glasses they will live a 3D experience, accompanied by interactive tools.

This is an exhibition for the whole family, a unique experience in which you can feel like you are inside Vienna at the turn of the century and experience the artist’s works first-hand. You can visit this exhibition every day from 10 am to 8.30 pm except Mondays, when it is available from 5 pm to 9 pm. Tickets are on sale until 31st August from €9,90.

Frida Kahlo: alas para volar

The Casa de México Foundation is hosting this exhibition, in which visitors will be able to enjoy more than 30 works by Frida Kahlo, as well as photographs of the artist. On display will be several works from private collections and ten of her best-known self-portraits, such as Diego y yo, Autorretrato con changuito and Mi nana y yo. There will also be several videos and photographs by the photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo and pages from the artist ‘s diary.

It is a journey through Kahlo’s career, from portraits of friends and family or the European influence to the Mexican and indigenous elements of her homeland. The four rooms allow the spectator to get to know the artist in depth, who dealt with different themes such as nature, relationships, motherhood and the vindication of the figure of women. Tickets are available to visit the exhibition from Monday to Sunday until 30th November.

Mexicráneos

This urban art exhibition has travelled around the world from Mexico to France, and now it is coming to Madrid. It can be enjoyed completely free of charge in El Retiro Park until 25 July. It is an exhibition of giant sculptures of skulls and skulls inspired by the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. Different artists, both renowned and emerging, have been in charge of creating these works that honour Mexican culture.

The sculptures, almost 2 metres high, invite us to reflect on the idiosyncrasies of pre-Hispanic peoples and their traditions. One of them consisted of decorating the skulls with ornaments as part of the funeral rite, making them a symbol of elevation to the spiritual plane. This is undoubtedly an innovative and evocative exhibition that brings the viewer closer to Mexican culture and a different vision of death.

The pop art culture

This exhibition by art curator Dolores Durán Úcar presents some of the most renowned works of American pop art. It is an exhibition in which visitors can soak up the pop art movement, which emerged in the United Kingdom in the 1950s and managed to spread to the United States, where it achieved its greatest recognition. Some of the most important artists of this movement were Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring.

This exhibition can be enjoyed until mid-September at the CentroCentro cultural space. Here you will find relevant works inspired by mass communication, advertising and the culture of the time. A very interesting opportunity to learn more about this artistic trend that is so influential in communication and art today.

Madrid offers a wealth of cultural options to soak up the city to the full. If you’re thinking of taking a getaway this summer, you can’t miss out on the experience of attending an exhibition. What’s more, the offer is so wide that you can choose according to your preferences and tastes.
